3 Levels of Data Abstraction — Exam Explanation
Data abstraction means hiding unnecessary details of data storage and showing only the information users need.
There are 3 levels:
1. Physical Level — Lowest Level
Describes how data is actually stored in the computer.
Deals with things like files, storage blocks, indexes, and memory.
Example: How a student's record is stored on a hard disk.
👉 Remember: How is data stored?
2. Logical Level — Middle Level
Describes what data is stored in the database.
Also describes the relationships between data.
Example: A Student table contains Student_ID, Name, and Course_ID, and Course_ID connects students to courses.
👉 Remember: What data is stored and how is it related?
3. View Level — Highest Level
Shows only the part of the database that a particular user needs.
Different users can see different views of the same database.
Example: A student can see their marks, while a teacher can see the marks of all students.
👉 Remember: What does the user need to see?
Easy way to memorize 🧠
Physical → Logical → View
How → What → What user sees
Exam-ready answer
The three levels of data abstraction are:
Physical Level: Describes how data is physically stored on hardware.
Logical Level: Describes what data is stored and the relationships among the data.
View Level: Describes only the specific part of the database that is relevant to a particular user.
One-line trick:
Physical = Storage, Logical = Structure, View = User's view.
