Agile Methods, XP and Scrum

Agile Methods

Agile is a software development approach that focuses on iterative development, customer collaboration, continuous feedback, and quick response to changing requirements. Instead of developing the entire system at once, software is developed and delivered in small, working increments.

Extreme Programming (XP)

XP is an Agile method that focuses mainly on high-quality software and frequent releases. It uses practices such as pair programming, test-driven development (TDD), continuous integration, simple design, and continuous customer feedback.

Scrum

Scrum is an Agile framework that organizes development into short, fixed periods called Sprints, usually 1–4 weeks. The team plans work, develops the product, reviews the result, and improves the process after each Sprint.

How XP and Scrum Fit into Agile

Both XP and Scrum follow Agile principles, but they focus on different areas:

  • XP focuses more on technical practices and software quality.
  • Scrum focuses more on project management, teamwork, and organizing development work.
  • Both encourage iterative development, customer feedback, continuous improvement, and responding to change.

In short: Agile is the overall approach, while XP and Scrum are different ways of applying Agile principles in software development.
